Habit Gets You There

Motivation gets you started but it’s habit that gets you there!

How often have you felt motivated to get started with a project or idea, only to find a few hours, days, or weeks down the road the motivation is slipping away or has disappeared completely?

The problem is that getting started is all well and good, but it is often much more difficult to maintain that motivation until the goal is achieved. This is where habits come in. Developing the right habits that relate to a particular goal is essential to success.

So what is the solution to that disappearing motivation?

It is as simple as working backwards from your goal to establish what habits you need to develop to take you there step by step!

Let’s take an example which I hope will serve to illustrate their power and importance.

Say your goal is to write your own blog. Your motivation has got you to the point where the blog is all set up, ready to go and now you need content to fill it and interest your readers. You need to write some posts.

Your goal is that you want to be a blogger  – but to be successful you need to develop a writing habit.

First decide on the frequency of your posts – and once that is decided you must commit to do everything in your power to keep to that timescale.

In reality it is better to write 100 words each day than 700 words once a week, because new habits become permanent as a result of repetition.

Research has found that a new habit becomes permanent after 30 consecutive days, so after an unbroken chain of 30 days writing you will find it very difficult to miss a day.

In the beginning, the subject of your writing is not the most important part of this exercise – it is the process or habit you are aiming for.
